Ok admittedly compared to the sort of advice we usually give on our site towards better game story creation Rovio's Angry Birds is not the ideal example of an epic game story but I felt compelled to write a quick article on them because they are a prime example of how even a simple upgrade in an existing kind of game's story and concept can create a much more successful game.
Rovio piggie backed on the idea of games such as crush the castle and castle clout to create a brand that is now estimated to be worth near $1 billion. The two previous games mentioned featured a catapult, a projectile (some rocks) and a castle. You needed to toss the projectile with the catapult at a castle and smash it to pieces - a bit dull to be honest - the angry birds games were soon to show these game's developers that even with a little effort into story telling can go along way to make a far more successful game.
